Hypothyroidism may also occur in patients taking amiodarone or other iodine-containing drugs, in patients taking interferon-alfa, and in patients taking checkpoint inhibitors or some tyrosine kinase inhibitors for cancer. When testing free T4, the daily dose of L-T4 should be withheld until after sampling, as free T4 is significantly increased above baseline for up to 9 hours after ingesting L-T4. Diminished perceptual and motor ability, markedly short attention span, lower mental development indices, defects in specific cognitive abilities such as poorer attention, slower and more variable reaction times to visual stimuli and visual processing, have been described. In a study[ 64 ] reviewing the medical records of patients with central hypothyroidism, it was found that the most common symptoms were fatigue and headaches in patients with adult-onset central hypothyroidism and growth retardation in those who were diagnosed as children.
